Des Moines, Iowa - The Oklahoma City RedHawks (46-34) overcame a slow start at the plate and got some clutch hits in the later innings to take a 3-1 win over the Iowa Cubs (33-48) before 6,407 at Principal Park Thursday night.
The RedHawks had just one hit through the first five innings, but the Cubs could not take of numerous scoring chances. Iowa broke the scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth, when Matt Tolbert tripled down the right field line and then scored on an errant relay throw.
However, the RedHawks took advantage of a Cubs error in the sixth to tie the game. Jimmy Paredes reached on a fielding error by catcher Wellington Castillo and eventually stole second base. With two outs, Brett Wallace delivered the team's first hit since the first inning to score Paredes and make it 1-1
The RedHawks struck twice more with two outs in the seventh. Landon Powell broke the tie with an RBI knock, and two batters later, Paredes provided another RBI single give the RedHawks a 3-1 lead.
The Cubs put the tying runners on base with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but Mickey Storey got Josh Vitters to ground out to end the inning. Storey pitched the final 2.1 frames and earned his first save of the season.
Despite outhitting the RedHawks 12-8, the Cubs went 1-for-13 with runners in scoring position and left 12 runners on base.
Aneury Rodriguez started the game for the RedHawks and allowed one run over five innings. Sergio Perez (2-1) followed with 1.2 scoreless innings to earn his first save since April 9.
Iowa pitcher Chris Volstad turned in a good performance, but ended up with the loss. Volstad (2-3) allowed three runs-two earned-and six hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and no walks.
