Metairie, LA - New Orleans Zephyrs starting pitcher Tom Koehler was named to the 2012 Pacific Coast League All-Star team, the league announced Thursday.
It is the first time since 2002 a Zephyrs pitcher used exclusively as a starter has been named to the All- Star team, when both Jeriome Robertson and Wayne Franklin were selected.
Koehler entered his start Wednesday night ranked fourth in the PCL in ERA (3.34), tied for third in strikeouts (84) and tied for fifth in wins (7). Three times this season, Koehler limited his opponent to just one hit, and twice recorded 10 strikeouts in a game, a career high.
Koehler, who celebrates his 26 th birthday on Friday, is in his fifth professional season, all with the Miami Marlins organization. An 18 th round selection out of Stony Brook University in 2008, Koehler was named the Southern League's Most Outstanding Pitcher in 2010 after going 16-2 with a 2.61 ERA for Class AA Jacksonville and earning the first All-Star honor of his career.
In 2011, Koehler finished tied for third in the Pacific Coast League with 12 victories, becoming the seventh Zephyr to win a dozen games in the season, and the first since 2002, when Robertson and Franklin hit the 12-win plateau.
The 2012 Triple-A All-Star Game will take place Wednesday, July 11 in at Coca-Cola Field in Buffalo, New York, home of the International League's Buffalo Bisons . The 25 th annual midsummer meeting between the Pacific Coast League and International League All-Stars will be nationally broadcast on MLB Network at 6:00 p.m. Central Time.
The Zephyrs return home on Wednesday, July 4th when they host the Oklahoma City RedHawks at 6:00 p.m. The first 6,000 fans will receive a Mini American Flag, and the Independence Day festivities includes postgame fireworks, and a concert with Local Option II.
