Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA - An early lead and a solid outing out of starter Chris Volstad was not enough as the Cubs dropped their sixth game in as many contests to RedHawks 3-1 at Principal Park tonight.

Matt Tolbert single-handedly put the Cubs on the board in the fifth. The switch hitter batting from the left side drilled a triple down the right field line, but a throwing error by second baseman Brandon Barnes caused Tolbert to come around to score just ahead of third baseman Brett Wallace's throw on a play at the plate.

The RedHawks tied up the game in the sixth. An error on a bunt by Iowa catcher Castillo allowed Paredes to reach first. The Pacific Coast League All-Star would steal second base and come around to score on an RBI-single by Wallace.

Oklahoma City would take its first lead of the game in the seventh. Barnes reached on an infield single that was batted down by third baseman Vitters. Barnes would advance to second when Tolbert snagged a ground ball up the middle and fired to first in time to rob Jake Goebbert of a hit for the second out of the inning. Landon Powell followed with an RBI-single to left that drove in Barnes from second, and advanced to third on a double by Angel Sanchez. With runners on second and third, Paredes singled to left field scoring Powell, but a bullet by Ty Wright gunned down Sanchez at the plate for the final out of the inning.

Wright would save another run in the ninth, delivering a strike to Castillo that gunned down former I-Cub Brad Snyder on a single by Goebbert.

Tolbert went 4-for-5, finishing only a home run shy of the cycle. The four hits were good for a season-high for the former Minnesota Twin, who also raised his batting average 17 points in the contest to .254 in the contest.

Vitters had a 10-game hitting streak snapped, going 0-for-4 in the game. The 2007 first round draft pick was the lone I-Cub selected to the Pacific Coast League All-Star team today.

Volstad (2-3) tied a season-high with seven strikeouts while allowing three runs (two earned) in seven innings of duty despite getting the loss. Sergio Perez (2-1) picked up the win in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief work following starter Aneury Rodriguez.

The Cubs and RedHawks will play the final game of the three-game series tomorrow night at Principal Park with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The first 7,000 fans in the gate will receive a free baseball thanks to Iowa Health and fireworks will follow the series finale presented by Mediacom. All the action can be caught on AM 940 with the On-Deck Circle Pre-game show beginning at 6:35 p.m.
