Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - Infielder Luis Rodriguez spearheaded the Tacoma Rainiers 4-1 series-opening win over the Las Vegas 51s in front of 6,117 fans at Cheney Stadium on Wednesday.
After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second, Tacoma tied the game in the bottom of the inning thanks to Rodriguez's two-out solo home run to left field off 51s starter Bill Murphy.
Rodriguez supplied the go-ahead run for the Rainiers in the fourth, driving in Carlos Peguero on a line-drive single with two outs. Third baseman Vinnie Catricala tacked on an insurance run later in the frame after scoring from third base on a double steal.
Peguero accounted for Tacoma's fourth and final run after plating Alex Liddi from second with a line-drive double to centerfield with two outs in the fifth inning.
Rodriguez, Peguero and outfielder Darren Ford accounted for six of the Rainiers eight combined hits in the contest after each turned in two-hit efforts.
Right-hander Blake Beavan (2-0) collected his second win in his third start with Tacoma after holding Las Vegas to one run on five hits over 6.0 innings. Beavan issued just one walk and struck out three.
Chance Ruffin (1.0), Bobby LaFromboise (1.0) and Scott Patterson (1.0) combined to allow just one hit and struck out four over a combined 3.0 innings of work out of the bullpen. Patterson picked up the third save of his 2012 campaign after tossing a shutout inning in the ninth.
The Rainiers (32-46) play the second game of the club's four-game series against the 51s (44-35) at 7:05 p.m. tomorrow, June 28. Mariners pitching prospect Danny Hultzen (0-1, 15.00) is scheduled to make his Cheney Stadium debut for Tacoma in the contest.
