Memphis Redbirds News Release
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Memphis Redbirds (19-28) fell behind early, giving up six runs in the first two innings, to lose their third consecutive game to the Las Vegas 51s (27-22) by a final of 11-5.
Jeremy Hefner was unable to snap a three-start losing streaking Sunday afternoon as his picked up his fourth loss of the season. Hefner threw a season-low of 1.2 innings and gave up six runs on five hits and only managed to have one strike out while walking four. He has not collected a win as a starter since his third outing of the season on April 20 against Oklahoma City.
David Washington went 1-for-3 on the day and hit his eighth home run of the season with Memphis. Washington has now reached safely in 18 of his 21 games as a Redbird in which he has had an official plate appearance.
After going 4-for-5 in last night's game, Nick Martini was able to go 1-for-4 at the plate and continue to be a consistent source of offense for the Redbirds. Martini has now reached base in 13 of the last 15 games and 35 of the last 41 overall that he has had at least one official plate appearance.
Alex Mejia was able to make an immediate impact on offense in his first game back in Triple-A with Memphis going 2-for-4 and picking up an RBI. He has now hit in 7 of the 11 games he has made appearances in with Memphis this year and has hit .313 while collecting 2 RBI.
Memphis used the most pitchers in a single game they have had to use all season with seven. Justin Wright, Corey Littrell, Miguel Socolovich and Juan Gonzalez combined to throw 5.1 innings and gave up just one run on four hits and struck nine while issuing just two walks.
Socolovich has not issued a walk in six-straight outings covering 6.2 innings after walking five in his first 15.2 innings of the season.
Alberto Rosario made an appearance on the mound for the Redbirds in the bottom of the eighth inning. He is the first position player to make a pitching appearance for the Redbirds since Mark Shorey on June 16, 2012, at Nashville.
The Redbirds play their final game of the four-game series against Las Vegas tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. (CT) before the Redbirds return to AutoZone Park for four games May 31-June 3.
