Tacoma Rainiers News Release
METAIRIE, La. - The Tacoma Rainiers (30-20) dropped a 2-1 contest with the New Orleans Zephyrs (21-28) on Saturday afternoon at Zephyr ballpark.
Starting pitcher Donn Roach (4-3) took the loss despite allowing just two runs (one earned) over 7.0 innings of work. Roach allowed just four hits, walked one, and struck out four.
Rainiers shortstop Chris Taylor led the club with a 2-for-4 afternoon, posting the only multi-hit performance. Catcher Mike Zunino drew a pair of walks, while left fielder Dario Pizzano drove in one run.
With two outs in the bottom of the third, Adrian Nieto singles to left field and came around to score on an RBI double from Kenny Wilson, giving the Zephyrs a 1-0 lead.
New Orleans lead held up until the top of the sixth inning, when Pizzano laced a bases-loaded single into left field to score first baseman Efren Navarro and knot the game up at 1-1.
The Zephyrs grabbed the lead right back in the bottom of the sixth with a two-out, one-run rally. Kenny Wilson drew a seven-pitch walk, stole second, and was driven in on an RBI single from Don Kelly, giving New Orleans the 2-1 advantage.
Reliever Jonathan Aro worked a scoreless eighth inning to extend his scoreless streak to 6.2 frames - he has allowed just one earned run in 10 appearances this month.
Right-hander Cody Martin (5-3, 5.65) will take the mound for Tacoma in the series finale tomorrow, Sunday, May 30. He will go against New Orleans righty Paul Clemens (4-4, 5.05). First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. PT.
