Colorado Springs Sky Sox News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO - Back at home after eight games on the road to start the season, the Sky Sox battled the Memphis Redbirds in a back-and-forth battle, but in the end it was the Redbirds who edged out the Sky Sox 10-9 to spoil the Sox home opener.

The Redbirds scored seven runs in the final four innings off the Sky Sox bullpen to take game one of a four game series.

Alex Presley got the Sky Sox off to a good start in their half of the first inning. He tripled to left to put the Sky Sox in good position. The next batter, Orlando Arcia, drove him home with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Sky Sox an early lead. Michael Reed followed with a single, his league leading 13th hit of the season.

In the third, the Redbirds were able to respond and take the lead. Jacob Wilson tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center. Later, Matt Wiliams scored on Carlos Peguero's ground out to give the Redbirds the lead. The next hitter, Anthony Garcia, homered to give Memphis a 3-1 lead.

That would be all the runs Sky Sox starter Jorge Lopez (0-0, 6.48) gave up. In his second start of the year, he pitched 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs while striking out three Redbirds.

Memphis starter Thomas Lee (0-1, 8.68) held the Sky Sox in check for the first four innings, but things changed for the better for the Sky Sox in the bottom of the fifth. Presley's second hit of the game, a single, got the Sky Sox started. Arcia followed with a triple to the right-center field gap to score Presley. Arcia tied the game by scoring on a fielder's choice ground ball from Michael Reed. After Andy Wilkins walked, Hernan Perez was able to give the Sky Sox the lead with a double that scored both Reed and Wilkins.

In the sixth, the Redbirds were able to retake the lead off Sky Sox reliever Jim Miller. Mike Ohlman doubled to score Patrick Wisdom. Nick Martini and Matt Williams each followed with a run scoring single to put the visitors ahead.

Just after the seventh inning stretch, the Sky Sox flexed their offensive muscles. Cecchini singled to center to score Wilkins. Eric Young Jr. then hit a ground ball to first baseman Jonathan Rodriguez, who appeared to have Perez out at home, but defensive interference was called, allowing Perez to score the tying run. Presley singled to center three batters later to score Cecchini and give the Sky Sox an 8-7 lead. Arcia followed with a sac fly to score Young Jr. and give the Sky Sox a 9-7 lead after seven.

In the eighth, Memphis again rallied to tie, this time on a bases loaded walk from Anthony Garcia and an infield single from Rodriguez.

Memphis completed their comeback in the ninth as Williams singled to right off reliever David Goforth to score Ohlman. Juan Gonzalez pitched the final two innings without allowing a run to get the win for the Redbirds.

In game two of the series tomorrow afternoon, Hiram Burgos (0-1, 12.00) is scheduled to get the start. His opponent will be Arutro Reyes (0-1, 1.80). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. at Security Service Field.
