Early-Inning Woes Haunt Z's in Loss to Omaha

April 16, 2016 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release

Early-inning struggles continued to haunt the New Orleans Zephyrs in Saturday's 6-1 loss to the Omaha Storm Chasers.

For the sixth time in as many games against Omaha this season, the Zephyrs allowed at least one run in the first inning. The Storm Chasers built a 3-1 lead after two innings on Saturday, and scored three times in the eighth to pull away, sending the Z's to a fourth consecutive defeat.

Jarrod Dyson led off the game with a single against Zephyrs starter Ivan Pineyro and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a stolen base. After Brett Eibner walked, Cheslor Cuthbert doubled to plate Dyson, and Balbino Fuenmayor lifted a sacrifice fly to bring in Eibner for a quick 2-0 lead.

Xavier Scruggs laced an RBI double in the bottom of the frame to cut the Zephyrs' deficit in half, though the Z's had two runners thrown out on the basepaths in the inning to prevent a bigger inning.

Omaha got the run back in the top of the second on Whit Merrifield's sacrifice fly to cash in a leadoff double by Parker Morin.

Still trailing 3-1 in the sixth, New Orleans loaded the bases with one out and Cole Gillespie worked his way into a 3-1 count against reliever Brian Flynn. But Flynn bounced back to strike out Gillespie, and shortstop Dusty Coleman made a difficult backhanded grab on a grounder into the hole by Destin Hood to get a force out at second base to escape the jam.

An error by second baseman Austin Nola opened the door for the Storm Chasers to score three times in the eighth. After a possible double play grounder scooted through Nola's legs with one out, and Fuenmayor took advantage with a single up the middle to knock in one run, and Jorge Bonifacio followed with a double to score another.

A wild pitch by Nick Wittgren with a runner at third base brought in a third run in the inning, extending Omaha's lead to 6-1.

Kenny Wilson had three hits and a stolen base for the Zephyrs, who finished 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position. New Orleans is hitting .193 with runners in scoring position this season.

Brooks Pounders (2-0) scattered six hits across five innings to pick up the win, and Mark Peterson went the final three frames to earn the save. Pineyro (0-2) was charged with three runs and six hits in six innings to take the loss.

The Zephyrs and Storm Chasers play the third game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
