Memphis Redbirds News Release

The Grizzlies and Redbirds battled back and forth Thursday afternoon, but it was Fresno that outlasted Memphis, walking off with the win in the 11th inning.

After the Grizzlies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Redbirds offense answered right back in the second, when Bartlett, TN native Jacob Wilson blasted his second home run in Redbirds uniform, giving Memphis a 2-1 lead.

The advantage did not last long for Memphis, as the Grizzlies were able to plate two more runs in the bottom of the third inning, chasing Redbirds starter John Gast from the contest after only 2 2/3 innings. The 26-year-old southpaw allowed four Fresno runs, three of which were earned, on nine hits during his time on the hill for Memphis.

The Redbirds would knot things up at 4-4 in the top of the sixth inning. After a pair of singles from Xavier Scruggs and Greg Garcia, Cody Stanley would deliver an RBI single of his own, scoring Scruggs. Garcia would then score on a sacrifice bunt, courtesy of Rafael Ortega, tying the game.

Kurt Heyer, Justin Wright, Marcus Hatley, and Dean Kiekhefer would go on to pitch a combined 7 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of John Gast. Heyer, the first to relieve Gast, tossed 4 1/3 innings, allowing only one hit.

The scoring resumed in the bottom of the 11th inning, when Redbirds manager Mike Shildt would turn to Sam Tuivailala. The right-hander threw just two pitches, both resulting in Fresno hits, which saw the winning run score on a Joe Sclafani line drive to center field.

The loss marks just the second time the Redbirds have fallen in their last eleven games.

The Redbirds return to AutoZone Park this Friday, May 29 to open an eight-game homestand against the Salt Lake Bees (Triple-A Angels) and Las Vegas 51s (Triple-A Mets) of the Pacific Southern Division, their lone series against each team this season.

Zach Petrick (3-3, 4.44), who has won his last three consecutive starts, gets the ball for Memphis. He will be opposed by Salt Lake's Zach Stewart (1-2, 4.15). First pitch on Friday from AutoZone Park is set for 7:05pm.
