Szczur Walk-Off Home Run Gives Iowa 3-2 Win over Reno Aces

DES MOINES, Iowa (May 28, 2015) - Matt Szczur smacked a three-run walk-off home run to give the Iowa Cubs (23-23) a 3-2 win over the Reno Aces (22-25) in Pacific Coast League action on Thursday afternoon at Principal Park.

Leading 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth, Reno turned to closer Jake Barrett (1-2) who came into the day third in the PCL with 10 saves. Barrett allowed back-to-back singles to Arismendy Alcantara and Adron Chambers before Szczur played the hero with his three-run smash to left field. It was Szczur's third home run of the season, and the fourth walk-off win for Iowa this year.

Reno scored first in the first inning on a Nick Evans RBI-single to plate Kevin Frandsen. They added another run in the second inning when Danny Worth scampered home on a safety squeeze by pitcher Caleb Clay.

Right-hander Donn Roach spun his eighth quality start of the season, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and a walk in 7.0 innings. He struck out two. It was Roach's third start of 7.0 innings or more this season.

Right-handers Gonzalez Germen and Brian Schlitter (2-0) tossed a scoreless inning apiece to keep Iowa within striking distance heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Clay was stellar for the Aces, tossing 8.0 scoreless innings on three hits and a walk. The right-hander struck out eight in a no-decision.

Szczur led Iowa with two hits, three RBI and a stolen base. Alcantara was on base twice with a hit and a walk.

Worth paced Reno with two doubles and a walk. Evans reached base twice on a single and a walk. Danny Dorn went 2-for-4.

Up next, the Cubs head to El Paso to take on the Chihuahuas, Triple-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. The four-game set starts Friday night at 8:05 p.m. CT. Right-hander Dallas Beeler (1-3, 8.06) will take the mound for Iowa against El Paso righty James Needy (4-2, 7.34). The game can be heard live on AM 940, 104.5 FM, and live-streamed at Iowacubs.com.
