Tacoma Rainiers News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - The Tacoma Rainiers suffered a 6-5 loss in extra innings to the Omaha Storm Chasers at Werner Park on Thursday night.
The top five members of Tacoma's batting order combined to go 11-for-23 with four runs and one RBI, while the entirety of the lineup smacked 15 hits. Ketel Marte notched three hits, while James Jones, Franklin Gutierrez, Leon Landry, Jesus Montero, and Shawn O'Malley all posted two-hit performances.
Starting pitcher Justin Germano posted 8.0 innings of work, allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts. All three runs scored on Germano came off solo home runs.
Reliever Tony Zych allowed two runs in the ninth inning to send the game to extras, and surrendered the winning run in the 10th to take his first loss of the year.
Jones led off the game with a single for Tacoma, stole second base, and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Ketel Marte. Gutierrez proceeded to bring Jones across the plate with an RBI double to give the Rainiers a 1-0 lead.
Omaha plated their first run in the third inning, when Francisco Pena sent out the first of four Storm Chasers solo home runs to knot up the score 1-1.
A four-run fourth inning for the Rainiers was highlighted by a two-RBI triple from O'Malley that extended the Tacoma lead to 5-1. Montero, Gutierrez, and Landry opened the frame with three straight singles to start the rally.
Another solo home run from Omaha, this time off the bat of Reymond Fuentes, cut the Rainiers lead to three runs at 5-2 in the sixth inning.
The Storm Chasers third homer of the game in the eighth inning marked the end of the damage Germano would sustain, and made the score 5-3 in favor of the visitors.
Omaha plated two runs in the ninth off Zych on a solo home run and two doubles to even the score up at 5-5 and send the game to extra innings.
In the first frame of extras the Rainiers put runners at the corners with no outs and loaded the bases with one out but couldn't push across a run.
Orlando Calixte led off the tenth for Omaha with a ground-rule double, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scored the winning run on a single from Lane Adams, giving the Storm Chasers a 6-5 victory.
The Rainiers return home to Tacoma to begin a four-game series with Round Rock tomorrow, May 29. Right-hander Sam Gaviglio (3-4, 5.63) will open the series for the Rainiers, while the Express will call on righty Jerad Eickhoff (4-2, 5.15). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
