September 12, 2021 - International League (IL)
Memphis Redbirds News Release
NASHVILLE, Tennessee - The Memphis Redbirds closed out the season series against the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A affiliate, Milwaukee Brewers) with a 6-3 win on a Sunday night at First Horizon Park. The two clubs split the 18-game season series, each winning nine games.
Early on, the game remained close. Memphis (53-61) and Nashville (60-54) each scored once in the first, followed by a lone run from the Redbirds in the third to take a 2-1 lead. Nolan Gorman drove in the run in the third inning via an RBI single. He has hits in seven straight games.
Then came the fourth, which brought an offensive explosion for the Redbirds. Memphis plated four runs on five hits in the frame, highlighted by a two-run single from Conner Capel and an RBI single from Brendan Donovan. The former South Alabama Jaguar was a beast at the plate this past week in Nashville. Donovan went 8-19 with eight runs scored, two home runs and eight runs driven in.
Given all the run support, Matthew Liberatore tossed a quality outing for the 'Birds, allowing three runs in seven innings on just five hits. The 21-year-old ended his start with a flourish, striking out the side in a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Liberatore had five strikeouts in his Sunday night start.
From there, the bullpen shut the door on the Sounds. Seth Elledge threw a scoreless eighth and Connor Jones hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. The Redbirds bullpen allowed just four hits in 4.2 innings over the final two games of the series.
The Memphis Redbirds are the proud Triple-A Affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. Memphis has claimed four League Championships and one Triple-A National Championship since their affiliation with St. Louis began in 1998.
