Bisons Fall to Mets in Homestand Finale, 10-2
September 12, 2021 - International League (IL)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
The Bisons offense failed to get going Sunday night in a 10-2 defeat to the Syracuse Mets from Sahlen Field. Buffalo was held to just one hit on the evening and scored only two unearned runs in dropping their regular season home finale.
The Bisons still won their six-game series over their Thruway rivals, 4-2, thanks to four straight victories to begin the week. However, Sunday's loss is extra painful for the Herd as Durham rallied to defeat the Norfolk Tides, 7-6, in 10 innings. The Bisons now trail Durham by 2.5 games for the overall best record in Triple-A East.
The Bisons magic number for the Northeast division is three as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre also lost on Sunday.
The Bisons' only hit produced a run as Buffalo tailed twice in the fourth inning. Facing a 4-0 deficit but with a runner on board via an error, Kevin Smith hit a smash single off the glove of Mets' third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert. That allowed Otto Lopez to score from third base for the Bisons first run. Buffalo scored a second run in the inning thanks to a second Syracuse error and an RBI groundout from Christian Colon.
Meanwhile the Mets had the longball working on a gusty night in downtown Buffalo. Kahlil Lee powered his 10th home run of the year into the Bully Hill Party Deck with two outs in the first inning and then homered again to right field to lead off the fourth.
Wilfredo Tovar also homered in the fourth inning as he lined a two-run shot beyond the wall in left field to give Syracuse a 4-0 advantage. Cuthbert capped the scoring with another two-run home run, an opposite field shot into Bully Hill off Bisons reliever, Hobie Harris, in the eighth inning.
The most damaging Mets rally, however, came in the seventh inning. After Buffalo had cut the deficit to 4-2, Syracuse scored four times before the stretch to break the game open. After Herd reliver Fitz Stadler retired the first two batters of the inning, he walked Mets' number nine hitter, Drew Jackson. With the inning still alive, the next five Syracuse hitters collected singles. Mark Payton, Tomas Nido, Jose Peraza and Travis Blankenhorn all drove in runs to put the game out of reach.
Bowden Francis was charged with the loss for the Bisons. He worked the first 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on four hits. He struck out five and walked just one batter. Jerad Eickhoff earned the victory for Syracuse, striking out nine and allowing the two unearned runs over six innings of work.
The Bisons will now have an off-day Monday before wrapping up the regular season with a seven-game in six-day series against the Red Wings in Rochester. Following that series, the Bisons will compete in the 10-game 'Final Stretch' playoff that includes home games at Sahlen Field, September 22-26 against Lehigh Valley.
