Pawtucket Red Sox News Release
(Rochester, NY) - Rochester pitching shut out Pawtucket for 14 innings starting with seven scoreless innings from Taylor Rogers in the opener and ending with three relievers combining on a four-hitter as the Red Wings took two games from the PawSox, 6-0 and 3-0, on Monday night at Frontier Field.
After Rogers (7-4) quieted the PawSox in the opener, spot-starter Logan Darnell (four innings) and relievers Caleb Thielbar (5-3) and A.J. Achter (save, 13) blanked Pawtucket in the nightcap in a seven-inning affair.
Brian Johnson (8-5) started game two for Pawtucket but threw only five pitches, all balls, and was removed from the game in favor of Dalier Hinojosa. Rochester scored in the first on Reynaldo Rodriguez's sacrifice fly and never relinquished the lead.
In the first game - which was the continuation of a contest that began on June 5th and was suspended by rain after two innings with Rochester leading 1-0 - Rodgers allowed only three hits and two walks to earn his seventh win. Pawtucket did not advance a runner past first base in the seven innings of the game that were played on Monday.
Keith Couch - who started the third inning for Pawtucket - shut the Wings down for three innings before they broke through and doubled their led. Reynaldo Rodriguez led off the sixth with a double to left, moved to third on a groundout by Oswaldo Arcia and scored on Aaron Hicks's sacrifice fly.
The Wings put the game away in the seventh. Danny Ortiz singled to right to open the inning; Doug Bernier then hit a soft dribbler toward shortstop for an infield hit. Couch then walked Ryan Wheeler to load the bases. Eric Farris hit a deep sacrifice fly to left that made it 3-0.
With runners at the corners and one out, James Beresford hit a grounder to short. The PawSox got the second out of the inning but by staying out of a double play, Beresford plated Doug Bernier and pushed the Wings' lead to 4-0.
Rodriguez then tripled to right field to score another run; Rodriguez came home to complete the seventh-inning scoring when Oswaldo Arcia hit a soft grounder to the left side of the infield. All told, nine Red Wings came to bat in the seventh inning, and four scored.
Rogers worked around a walk in the eighth and an error in the ninth to lock up the victory. Zeke Spruill (4-3), who started the game on June 5th and allowed one run in two innings, took the loss.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night with first pitch is slated for 7:05pm. Lefty Henry Owens (2-5, 3.46) will get the start for Pawtucket against Rochester right-hander Ervin Santana (2-0, 2.84). Radio coverage on 920 AM (WHJJ) and also streaming online begins at 6:50 pm.
The PawSox return home on Thursday, July 2nd to welcome Scranton/Wilkes-Barre for a quick two-game series that will feature patriotic-themed fireworks shows after each contest. Good seats are still available at the McCoy Stadium box office, by calling (401) 724-7300 or by visiting pawsox.com.
