Catch Alex Avila at Fifth Third Field this Week

Check out Tigers All-Star catcher Alex Avila in Toledo this week! He is expected in the lineup during each of the Mud Hens five home games from June 29 through July 3, with hopes of being activated from the disabled list on Saturday. Avila is rehabbing a left knee injury that has kept him out of Detroit since May 8.

"Avila, on the disabled list since May 8 with a left knee injury, is scheduled to head out on a rehabilitation assignment to Triple-A Toledo. Starting this Friday, Avila will catch 3-5 innings. On Saturday, he will be the designated hitter. On Sunday, Avila will catch five innings. Monday, he'll serve as the DH again. On Tuesday, Avila will catch seven innings. Wednesday, he'll be the DH again. Then he will catch back-to-back games Thursday and Friday, 7 innings and 5-7 innings, respectively."

The 28-year old is hitting .200 for Detroit this season in 22 games player, with 2 HR and 8 RBI. He had a breakout season in 2011, earning a trip to his first All-Star game en route to career highs in average (.295), home runs (19) and RBI (83).

Avila has had two previous rehab stints with the Hens. In 2012, he went 3-7 in three games for Toledo. In 2013, he played in 12 games for the Mud Hens and batted .250 with a home run and 5 RBI.
