Red Claws Stop Mad Ants

Portland, ME - The Maine Red Claws, presented by Unum, erased a 10 point deficit to beat the Fort Wayne Mad Ants Friday night, 109-105.

Maine (2-4) was led by their Two-Way Players. Walt Lemon scored a team season high 34 points against his former team, while P.J. Dozier scored 20 of his 27 points in the 2nd half, helping Maine to victory. Marcus Georges-Hunt and Vitto Brown scored 14 points each for the Claws. Fort Wayne (3-2) was led by Edmond Sumner with 26 points, and Alize Johnson, on assignment from the Indiana Pacers, who scored 23 points.

The Red Claws came out with a lot of energy, scoring 6 quick points. Lemon scored 7 early points, giving Maine an early 11-8 lead. Vitto Brown dropped in a three to extend the Red Claws lead. Edmond Sumner tied the game at 14 with a floating bank shot, and Alize Johnson gave the Mad Ants the lead with a lay-up on the next possession. John's three-point play put Fort Wayne up 3, but Brown's three gave Maine a 24-23 lead after 1.

In the 2nd, Lemon picked up right where he left off, spinning home a tough shot with his left hand. The two teams traded shots in the early minutes of the period, with Maine maintaining a slight advantage. Ben Moore's three-point play tied the game at 33, but Lemon followed that up with a long 3. Dozier's emphatic dunk put the Claws up 40-34. Fort Wayne went on a 17-2 run to take a 51-42 lead. Lemon stopped the bleeding, but Fort Wayne led 56-46 at the break. Fort Wayne out-scored Maine 33-22 in the 2nd quarter.

The Red Claws opened the 3rd with a Dallas Lauderdale alley-oop slam. Lemon's bucket cut the deficit to 5. Dozier heated up, dropping in two jumpers in a row. Stephan Hicks drained a tough three to stop the run. Georges-Hunt's lay-up cut it to 4. Hicks buried another corner 3 to right the ship. Dozier's back-to-back alley-oops from Lemon cut it to 1. The Red Claws trailed 80-79 after 3.

The Red Claws took the lead on a Dozier runner to open the 4th quarter. Hicks answered with a lay-up of his own. Brown buried a three to put the Claws up 86-82. Georges-Hunt dropped in a pair of threes to put Maine up 11. The Claws turned the ball over on two straight possessions, and the Ants cut it to 98-92. Johnson buried a contested three to cut it to 102-99. Lemon scored on two straight possessions, including a three to beat the shot clock, putting the Claws back up 7. Sumner got to the line with :22.5 left, and cut it to 107-105. Lemon and Brown hit the free throws to put it away.

Maine shot 50.6% (43-85) from the field, and 33.3% (10-30) from beyond the arc. Fort Wayne shot 48.6% (35-72) from the floor and 40% (10-25) from three-point range.
