Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - In a good news, bad news, scenario Wednesday night-the Cincinnati Cyclones dropped a 4-3 overtime decision to the Reading Royals. Former Cyclone Malcolm MacMillan scored 3:35 into overtime to end the contest. The good news? With the point in the standings, Cincinnati re-establishes a one point lead over Dayton for the North Division lead.
The Cyclones opened the scoring 1:33 into the game when defenseman Chad Starling broke in alone and beat goaltender Yutaka Fukifuji for his third goal of the season. Travis Lisabeth and Mike Wirll added the assists. The assist by Wirll extended his consecutive game point streak to six games-third-best currently among ECHL players.
Before the period ended, Reading scored twice. The first came at 9:28 with Jon Francisco netting his eleventh and at 12:43, Joe Zappala tallied his eleventh.
In the second period, Cincinnati evened the score at 2-2, when Billy Irish-Baker, playing his third professional game, tapped home his first goal. Greg Stewart worked the puck out of the right corner and headed for the front of the net. Off a Fukifuji rebound, Irish-Baker alertly followed the play to knot the game up.
Wirll netted his ECHL-leading 41st goal at 2:39, with Greg Gallagher and Barret Ehgoetz adding the assists. Reading tied the game once again at 3-3, with Michael Cohen's first pro goal at 5:25.
In the overtime, Malcolm MacMillan stuffed his tenth goal of the season into the back of the Cincinnati net at 3:35 to end the contest. The Cyclones outshot the Royals, 34-24, for the game.
The Cyclones are now 32-22-3-2, leaders of the North Division lead by one point over Dayton. Reading is 28-28-1-5 on the season and is in fifth place in the North. The Cyclones return to U.S. Bank Arena on Friday, March 16 at 7:30pm, playing the Trenton Titans.
