Reading Doubles up RubberDucks 8-4
April 23, 2018 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Reading catcher Deivi Grullon slugged a key, solo homer in the fifth inning and later added a sacrifice fly to lead the Fightin Phils to an 8-4 victory over the Akron RubberDucks Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium in Reading, Pa.
Turning Point
With the score tied, 4-4, Grullon jumped on the first pitch he saw from Aaron Civale leading off the fifth inning and connected for a long homer to left field to give the Fightins (7-11) a 5-4 lead. It was Grullon's third homer of the season.
Mound Presence
Civale (1-1) allowed only five hits in his five innings of work, but three of those were home runs. After the Ducks staked him to a 3-1 lead, the right-hander ran into trouble in the third inning. He served up a leadoff homer to Malquin Canelo and issued a walk to Damek Tomscha. Two batters later, Zach Green hammered a two-run homer to left field to give the Fightins a 4-3 lead. Civale walked one and struck out six.
Duck Tales
The RubberDucks (8-9) briefly tied the game, 4-4, on a run-scoring double by Dorssys Paulino in the fourth inning. Paulino finished 2-3 on the night and also chipped in an RBI single in the RubberDucks three-run third inning. Joe Sever had the big hit in the 3rd, a two-run single, that gave the Ducks a 3-1 lead at the time.
