Bridgeport Islanders News Release
ALBANY, NY --Â Nick Dodge scored the game-winning goal in overtime and Justin Peters made 22 saves as the Albany River Rats rallied in the final seconds of regulation to defeat the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 4-3 in overtime, Saturday night at the Times Union Center. The Sound Tigers fall to 21-18-2-3 on the season with the loss.
Albany outshot Bridgeport 47-25 in the game. Sound Tigers goaltender Nathan Lawson made 45 saves to keep his team in the game and help Bridgeport earn a point.
Jay Harrison opened the scoring for the River Rats at the 9:02 mark of the first period. Harrison took a pass from Steven Goertzen and snapped a shot from the top of the face-off circle that beat Lawson. It was Harrison's second goal of the season.
Bridgeport was called for five penalties in the first period, resulting in four Albany power-plays, including back-to-back 5-on-3 advantages late in the stanza. The River Rats took advantage of the first one as Bryan Rodney fired a blast from the blue-line that sailed over Lawson's glove and into the back of the net.
The Sound Tigers scored three unanswered goals in the second and third periods to take the lead.
Victor Bartley put the Sound Tigers on the board with 2:54 left in the second period. With Bridgeport on the power-play, Bartley took a pass from Greg Moore and ripped a shot from the blue-line through Peters legs and into the net. It was Bartley's second goal of the season. Just 37 seconds later, Greg Maudlin carried the puck into the offensive zone and dropped a pass back to Jesse Joensuu who snapped a shot into the top corner of the net to tie the score. It was Joensuu's ninth goal of the year and extended his point scoring streak to ten straight games.
Lawson made two outstanding saves on Jerome Samson in the final minute of the second period to preserve the tie.
Sean Bentivoglio scored a shorthanded goal at the 9:07 mark of the third period to put the Sound Tigers ahead. Tyler Haskins moved into the offensive zone and put a backhand shot on goal. Peters turned it aside but Bentivoglio charged the net and poked the rebound into the net for his 13th goal of the season.
The River Rats pulled their goaltender in the final seconds of regulation for an extra attacker. As Albany kept the pressure on in the offensive zone, the puck came out to Jonathan Paiement who fired a shot past a screened Lawson and into the goal with 15 seconds left to even the score and force overtime. Dodge scored the game-winner at the 1:51 mark of the extra session, slamming home a loose puck in the crease following a scrum for a rebound.
The Sound Tigers are back home Sunday afternoon as they battle the Worcester Sharks at Harbor Yard. Face-off is set for a special time of 1:00 pm. For tickets, please call TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000.
