Adirondack Phantoms News Release
NORFOLK, VA - John Grahame made 28 saves and shouldered the Adirondack Phantoms to a 3-1 come-from-behind win over the Norfolk Admirals Saturday night at the Norfolk Scope Arena, giving Adirondack their first three-game winning streak of the season.
The opening face off marked the 600th career AHL game as a head coach for Phantoms bench boss Greg Gilbert. Playing in their 40th game of the season, Adirondack was looking to carry momentum into the AHL All-Star Break. The Admirals had the only two power plays of the first period and defenseman Ty Wishart came the closest to scoring when he rang his slap shot off the cross bar late in the frame, but neither team would find the net.
Starting goaltender John Grahame was the highlight of the second period for Adirondack, making several dazzling saves, including a fantastic glove save on Mark Parrish during an Admirals power play. Late in the frame, just six seconds after the Phantoms killed of a penalty to Grahame, Blair Jones centered the puck to Ryan Craig, who was wide open in the low slot and Craig shot it through the legs of Grahame at 18:05 for a 1-0 lead.
The Phantoms were not deterred by the late goal and came right back in the third period on a great individual effort from Ryan Dingle to tie the game. The Adirondack center raced in on the forecheck and out-muscled Norfolk defenseman Kevin Quick, then twisted his way to the front of the net and backhanded the puck inside the near post for his third goal of the year, unassisted at 3:18. Three minutes later Dingle's linemate Rob Bellamy gave the Phantoms the lead for the first time in the game as he took the rebound from an Andreas Nodl shot and quickly snapped the puck into the roof of the net for his first goal of the year at 6:20. The Admirals pulled their goaltender with 90 seconds left, but Krys Kolanos iced the game with an empty net goal at 19:07, assisted by David Laliberte and Jonathon Kalinski; it was Kolanos' third straight game with a goal.
John Graham was out-standing all night long, stopping 28-of-29 shots for his second win of the year, helping the Phantoms improve to 20-18-2-0 on the season and into a third place tie with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the East Division. Jaroslav Janus turned aside 24-of-26 shots as the Admirals dropped to 17-23-2-0. Norfolk out-shot Adirondack 29-27 in the game and went 0-for-4 on the power play; the Phantoms were 0-for-1 with the man-advantage.
The Phantoms now head into the AHL All-Star Break and will not return to action until Friday, January 22nd as they travel to Binghamton for a 7:00 pm face off with the Senators at Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena. Adirondack's next home game is Round Eight of the Time Warner Cable Cup series with the Albany River Rats on Saturday, January 23rd at 7:00 pm at the Civic Center.
