Pirates Burn Devils In Shootout Victory

Lowell, MA - Mark Mancari netted the shootout game winner as the Portland Pirates nipped the Lowell Devils 3-2 in an American Hockey League game played this afternoon in front of 5,493 at the Tsongas Arena.

Paul Byron and Nathan Gerbe also scored in the shootout for the Pirates while Jhonas Enroth was a perfect three-for-three against Devils shooters. Philip Gogulla and Gerbe scored in regulation for the Pirates, who improved to 21-15-5-2 with the win.

Michael Swift and Ben Walter scored for the Devils, who sunk to 25-16-3-1 on the season.

Gogulla opened the scoring eight minutes into the game with the two teams playing four-on-four. Swift tied it with 11.4 seconds remaining in the period. Gerbe pushed the Pirates back into the lead with the only goal of the second period, a power-play marker that gave Portland a 2-1 advantage heading into the third. Walter evened things up, and forced an eventual overtime period and shootout, midway through the third as he capitalized on a goal-mouth scramble.

The Devils out shot the Pirates 32-26 in the game.

The Allied Home Mortgage Three Stars of the game were all from the Devils. Walter was the first, goaltender Mike McKenna (24 saves) the second and Swift the third.

The next Pirates game will take place Saturday, January 23rd when the Devils visit the Cumberland County Civic Center for a 7 p.m. start. It's a Labatt Blue Light Hockey Night in Portland. It's also a Casco Bay High School Pirates Production as Casco Bay High School students in the junior Achievement Company Program will create a logo, develop a business plan, finalize a mission statement and vision for the game.
