Worcester Sharks News Release

WORCESTER, MA - The Worcester Sharks crushed the first-placed Manchester Monarchs 5-2 in front of a hefty crowd during their seventh meeting of the season on Saturday night at the DCU Center.

Worcester's Steven Zalewski and Brandon Mashinter both tallied a goal and assist, while Danny Groulx and Jason Demers recorded two assists a piece.

Despite three Worcester powerplays and a few close calls in front of Manchester goalie Jeff Zatkoff, the teams were unable to net the puck, leaving the first period scoreless. However, the Sharks controlled the ice, outshooting the Monarchs 16-8.

Manchester jumpstarted the second period when defenseman Corey Elkins scored a power play goal at 4:34 to bring the Monarchs to a 1-0 lead. Worcester's Steven Zalewski responded by wrapping a goal around the post at 10:29 assisted by Danny Groulx and Jason Demers. Right-wing Dan DaSilva took advantage of a power play, sniping yet another goal for Worcester at 13:54, putting the Sharks up 2-1. Derek Joslin and Brandon Mashinter tallied the assists on the goal. Logan Couture tapped in a shorthanded goal past a sprawled Zatkoff at 18:11, assisted by Zalewski and Demers to end the second at 3-1.

Worcester's Brandon Mashinter lengthened the Sharks' lead with a wicked snap shot form the right circle on the rush scoring his 12th goal of the season at 9:42 in the third period, with Frazer McLaren notching the assist. Manchester's Viatcheslav Voynov retaliated on a power play at 18:18 with his eighth goal of the year, shortening the gap to 4-2. In rebuttal, John McCarthy scored a goal on an empty Manchester net with just 58 seconds to go, finishing off the game with a score of 5-2.

With the win, the Sharks move to 25-14-1-2 (53 points) on the season.
