Sean Ratliff clobbered a pair of homers off New Britain left-hander Tyler Robertson and drove in five runs to propel Binghamton past the Rock Cats 13-3 at NYSEG Stadium Tuesday night. Ratliff roped three hits, including a pair of two-run shots, and has delivered long balls in the B-Mets last two games.
Binghamton (35-35) got off to a healthy start against Robertson. Luis Hernandez doubled off the southpaw to open the first. Ratliff followed by crushing a fastball out of the yard to right-center, against the wind, pitting the B-Mets a 2-0 lead.
The B-Mets tallied again in the second. Mike Nickeas reached with one out on an infield single. Brahiam Maldonado smoked a groundball to short that Chris Cates couldn't handle cleanly initially, however the shortstop shuffled to second to get the lead runner. With Maldonado aboard, Jose Coronado and Hernandez ripped back-to-back singles to plate him, upping the lead to 3-0.
After Josh Stinson hurled two scoreless innings, New Britain (18-52) began to mount a comeback in the third. Joe Benson reached on a fielder's choice to Stinson to record the inning's first out. Yancarlos Ortiz joined Benson on the basepaths when Coronado's throw from third intended to beat Benson to second, sailed high, pulling Josh Satin off second. Erik Lis made the error stick with an RBI single to center, getting the Rock Cats on the board, 3-1.
Steve Singleton brought New Britain within a run in the fourth. He led off the frame with a double, moved to third on Juan Portes' groundout and scored when Mark Dolenc rolled out to first.
In the fifth, the B-Mets second error of the game allowed the Rock Cats to even the score. With runners on at first and second via walks, Stinson induced the groundball he was looking for as Chris Parmelee ripped one at first baseman Nick Evans. Evans went to second for the first out and Luis Hernandez performed the pivot, firing to first where Stinson was covering, but the starter dropped the throw, allowing Benson to motor home from second to tie the score.
Stinson exited after five innings and was charged for three runs - one earned - on four hits with six strikeouts to garner a no-decision. Eddie Kunz followed Stinson and offered up two, shutout innings to pick up his fifth win of the year.
Binghamton broke the 3-3 deadlock in the seventh, hitting for the cycle in the inning. Maldonado doubled to start the inning off Robertson and was sacrificed to third by Coronado. Hernandez plated the runner from third with a triple over the head of Parmelee in right, his fourth three-bagger of the year, vaulting the B-Mets to a 4-3 lead. Ratliff put the finishing touches on the inning with a two-run blast down the line in right on a hanging breaking ball, knocking Robertson out of the game. Loek Van Mil replaced the lefty and gave up a single to Nick Evans to complete the team cycle and give Evans an eight-game hitting streak.
Robertson was hung with the loss despite tying a season-best with 6 1/3 innings of work. He permitted six runs on 10 hits to drop his seventh game, remaining winless on the year.
The B-Mets made it a laugher in the eighth with seven runs off three different New Britain relievers who hit three batters, gave up four hits and walked two in the disastrous frame. The inning also included a 25-minute rain delay.
The middle game of the three-game set is set for Wednesday at 6:35 PM when Binghamton will attempt to move over .500 for the first time since May 16. The BMets will start RHP Jenrry Mejia (0-0, 0.00) and the Rock Cats will counter with RHP Carlos Gutierrez (2-5, 4.90). The radio broadcast on Newsradio 1290 WNBF begins at 6:20 PM with the Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show.
