Chesapeake Baysox News Release
BOWIE, Md. - The Bowie Baysox announce today Autism Awareness Night Friday, July 9, as the Baysox take on the Trenton Thunder at Prince George's Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The event includes a pregame ceremony with members from the autism community, informational tables on the concourse and a quiet room where families can take a short break from the bustle of the stadium.
The pregame ceremony features a speech on the importance of autism awareness by Miss Maryland 2009, Brooke Poklemba. Poklemba is the spokeswoman for Pathfinders of Autism and will also sing the national anthem before the game.
Baysox Office Manager Karen Marcher is coordinating the team's ticket offer that will raise money for autism-related organizations. "Through our special ticket offer last year, the Baysox were able to donate over $300 to various autism charities and organizations," Marcher said. "This year, we hope to surpass that total with help from our fans and the community. Autism affects roughly one in 150 births, touching the lives of many people in our community, and the Baysox are excited to support a cause that is so prevalent."
This year, for every upper and lower reserved seat ticket fans purchase for the event through Marcher, the Baysox will donate $3 to the autism organization of the fan's choosing. Last year the team sold more than 100 reserved tickets for the event.
Baysox Assistant General Manager Phil Wrye says the event is important to raise awareness of the disorder. "According to the organization Autism Speaks, autism affects one in 110 children and one in 70 boys," Wrye said. "We hope that we can help our fans gain a better understanding of the disorder, including diagnosis and treatment options, through this event at our ballpark."
In order to generate the donation, fans must order tickets at by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 7. To order tickets, fans can contact Marcher at (301) 805-6000 or kmarcher@baysox.com.
Organizations scheduled to attend the event include: Pathfinders for Autism, Howard County Autism Society, One World Center for Autism, Anne Arundel County Chapter - Autism Society of America, Arc of Prince George's County and Autism Speaks.
