
Rapids Sign Club's Two-Time Defender of the Year Lalas Abubakar to New Contract

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids have agreed to a new contract with defender Lalas Abubakar through the 2024 season with a club option for another year, the club announced today.
"We're delighted to secure Lalas' future in Burgundy," said Padraig Smith, Colorado Rapids Executive VP & General Manager. "Lalas has been an integral part of our defense during his two seasons with the club and we look forward to seeing him anchor our backline for several years to come."
Abubakar has started 40 games for Colorado since joining the team during the 2019 season, including Colorado's first-round match in the Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. The 25-year-old scored one goal for the Rapids in 2020 while posting the second-most blocks in MLS. Abubakar was named the club's Defender of the Year in each of his two seasons with the Rapids.
Abubakar started his MLS career with Columbus Crew SC in 2017, scoring two goals while making 31 regular season appearances and four in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs. Abubakar played three years at the University of Dayton before being selected fifth overall by Crew SC at the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
