Providence Bruins News Release
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Tyler Randell scored with less than 0:24 left in regulation to give the Providence Bruins a 5-4 win over the St. John's IceCaps Saturday night at the Mile One Centre. It was Randell's second of the weekend.
The Bruins matched their scoring output from Friday in the first period Saturday, but it was not enough to hold a lead. After shutting out St. John's the night before, Jeremy Smith allowed three goals in the opening period. Blair Riley and the IceCaps got off to an early lead, though the initial advantage didn't last.
Only 0:33 into the contest, Riley beat the Providence netminder. Chris Breen tied the game up shortly thereafter, notching his second goal in a P-Bruins uniform. His goal at 2:17 was one of three game-tying strikes in the frame. The home team re-took the lead with a goal from Joel Armia just more than a minute later, and neither team scored for more than ten minutes after that.
Andrew Cherniwchan re-tied it with a goal five-hole on Peter Budaj on a shot he took on the goal line. Only 14 ticks later, Providence took its first lead at 3-2, as Zack Phillips took a wrister from the right wing circle. After misplaying the bid, Budaj was pulled, and Conor Hellebuyck came in to relieve him.
The IceCaps weren't down for long, as Armia scored his second of the night to tie the game at three apiece. Jason Jaffray intercepted the puck on the edge of the slot, then the ensuing shot from Chase Balisy was saved. Armia took the rebound and knocked it in from the left wing side 1:02 after Phillips' goal.
Alexander Khokhlachev broke the tie with the only goal of the second. Colin Stuart found Seth Griffith, and the center finished the play on a smooth move through the low slot at 9:10.
St. John's was unable to score on 1:46 worth of a 5-on-3 power play, but another Providence penalty set up another game-tying goal. Patrice Cormier's man-advantage strike at 12:34 made it 4-4, and that score held for just more than seven minutes. Randell scored from the slot after a blocked shot with less than 0:24 to go, and the P-Bruins ended the season series only two points away from perfection (14 out of a possible 16 in eight games).
The Bruins will be back at the Dunkin Donuts Center for a home-and-home with the Worcester Sharks Friday at 7:05pm EDT.
