Springfield, M.A. - Falcons Defeat Pirates 5-2 Springfield pulls even with Portland in playoff race

The Portland Pirates (37-25-6) faced off against the Springfield Falcons (36-27-8) in Springfield, MA at the Mass Mutual Center Saturday night for the fourth out of five meetings this season. Pirates had previously won all three meetings between the two teams and it was a battle for the eighth and final spot in the east. It was the last home game for the Springfield Falcons and a must win game for them if they wanted any chance in competing in the Calder Cup playoffs.

Springfield came out with determination and drew first blood early in the first period as Derek Docken scored at 2:14, making it Docken's first professional goal. Lukas Sediak and Trent Vogulhuber picked up the assists. The first two penalties of the game came when Darian Dzuirzynski and Hubert Laurie were each called for roughing at 11:48. Thomas Larkin for the Springfield Falcons was called on a penalty soon after for kneeing at 12:26. Phil Lane got called at 16:01 for delay of game. A scuffle ensued behind the Springfield bench with 32 seconds left between Matt Lashoff and Sean Collins. Both players headed to the box for roughing at 19:27 and Lashoff picked up an extra 2 minutes for elbowing.

The Falcons took full advantage of their power play as they scored another early goal at the start of the second period. T.J. Tynan found the back of the net at 59 seconds in the first period, assisted by Sonny Milano and Ryan Craig. Springfield continued to stay hot and made it a 3-0 lead at 8:30 when Captain Ryan Craig netted a goal, assisted this time by T.J. Tynan and Josh Anderson. Consecutive slashing penalties were called in the 2nd, the first one on T.J. Tynan at 13:26. Followed by one called on Phil Lane at 16:31 and Ryan Craig shortly after for slashing at 16:57.

The third frame began with another goal from the Springfield Falcons as Sean Collins converted a breakaway at 36 seconds into the period. Ryan Craig and Frederic St. Denis were credited with the assists. The Pirates stayed alive when Lucas Lessio put the Pirates on the board at 14:54 in the third period, assisted by Brendan Shinnimin. Pirates took a chance and pulled Mike McKenna with 5:30 remaining in the third period but it did not pay off when the Springfield scored their fifth goal of the night, an empty net goal. Mike McKenna (26-14-5) saved 18 out of 23 shots on goal. Springfield's Scott Munroe (9-10-3) saved 25 out of 27 on net tonight. The Pirates and Falcons are now tied for eighth place in the east.

The Pirates will host the Worcester Sharks on Tuesday night at 7:00pm and will travel to Manchester Friday night, April 10th to revenge the overtime loss last night to the Monarchs. The Pirates will return home as they welcome the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to town for a two game series on Saturday night, April 11th at 7:00 and Sunday afternoon, April 12th at 3:00.
