Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, Mass. - The Springfield Falcons capsized the Portland Pirates, 5-2, during the regular season home finale tonight at the MassMutual Center.

Ryan Craig, T.J. Tynan and Josh Anderson recorded multi-point games, while Derek Docken notched his first professional goal.

The victory earned the Falcons a big two points as they continue their pursuit of a spot in the playoffs. The team now sits 36-27-8-1 on the season with 81 points. This also marks the first Falcons win in the four-game season series between the teams.

Falcons goaltender Scott Munroe turned aside 33-of-35 shots, while his Pirates counterpart Mike McKenna allowed four goals on 21 shots. Springfield was able to convert on one-of-three power play opportunities. The penalty kill unit was successful in shutting down all five Portland man-advantages.

The Falcons opened scoring just 2:34 into the opening frame. Lukas Sedlak received a pass in the right circle from Trent Vogelhuber and fired on McKenna. The netminder made the save and the rebound kicked out for Docken to light the lamp. Sedlak picked up his first point since Jan. 18 after missing the last 24 contests.

Springfield built up a three-goal lead in the second period thanks to markers from Tynan and Craig. Just 56 seconds into the middle twenty, Craig sent a cross-crease pass to Sonny Milano in the right circle. Tynan skated in to blast a one-timer past McKenna for a power-play tally.

At the 8:30 mark, Anderson powered a shot from the right circle. Craig got a stick on it and redirected it into the net for his fourth multi-point game of the season. Tynan earned the secondary assist and recorded his sixth multi-point contest.

Half a minute into the final period, the Falcons struck again. Craig sent the puck from the end boards down to Sean Collins at the Pirates' blue line. Collins beat the defender and shoveled in his 16th of the season.

With 6:06 remaining in the game, the Pirates were finally able to get on the board. Lucas Lessio wrapped around the net and beat Munroe while he was out of position. Brendan Shinnimin earned credit for the helper.

Two minutes later, Anderson took back a four-goal lead for the Falcons by adding an empty net shorthanded tally. Craig earned his fourth point of the night on the play. However, the Pirates were quick to steal it back when Darian Dziurzynski scored off assists from Eric Selleck and Francis Wathier with 2:51 left on the clock.

Springfield was able to fend off Portland for the remainder of the game and took a 5-2 victory.

The Falcons hit the road to face I-91 rival Hartford Wolf Pack on Friday, April 10 at 7 p.m.
