San Antonio Rampage News Release
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (March 23, 2014) - The San Antonio Rampage (26-29-3-6) got a four-point game from Bobby Butler and beat the Charlotte Checkers (32-30-1-2) 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Time Warner Cable Arena. The win marked the first road win in March for the Rampage and the first time this season the Silver and Black have recorded a victory in the Queen City.
Butler recorded his 100th career AHL point, tallying two goals and two assists to earn the First Star of the Game while becoming the first Rampage player this season to record a four-point game. The starting line of Butler, Wade Megan and Jed Ortmeyer was on fire, accounting for three of San Antonio's four goals. Megan and Ortmeyer each added a goal and an assist.
The Rampage kicked off the scoring in the first period, the first time since March 13 that San Antonio has scored the first goal of the game. With the Rampage on the penalty kill in the waning minutes of the period, Jared Gomes, fighting for the puck in San Antonio's offensive zone, left it for Butler, who picked it up and got an uncontested shot off on Mike Murphy to give the Rampage a 1-0 lead at 17:00.
The goal was the second shorthanded goal of the year for Butler and the eighth of the season for the Rampage.
The Checkers answered on the power play in the second period. Just seconds after Scott Clemmensen made a tremendous save in front of the net, Chris Terry fed Michal Jordan on the point and Jordan's one-timer slipped past Clemmensen to knot the game at one at 4:45.
San Antonio struck again just minutes later. Megan's initial shot on the break was stopped by Murphy, but Butler buried the rebound to give the Silver and Black a 2-1 lead at 7:18.
Butler's hot hand continued as he recorded his third point of the game when his centering pass was deflected in by Jed Ortmeyer at 12:20, giving the Rampage a 3-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
Charlotte started the scoring in the third period, as Victor Rask scored at 3:37. On the break, Terry fed Rask on the right point and Rask's shot got caught in Clemmensen's pad before trickling in to make it 3-2.
San Antonio sealed the win with a late goal by Megan at 17:40. Ortmeyer was credited with the primary assist, and with the secondary assist, Butler tallied his fourth point.
Charlotte finished the game with a 33-30 edge in shots, and Scott Clemmensen made 31-of-33 saves to earn the Third Star of the Game. The Rampage finished 0-for-5 on the power play and held the Checkers to 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
The Rampage wrap up a five-game road trip when they head to Oklahoma City to take on the Barons on Tuesday at 7 p.m. San Antonio returns home on Thursday, March 27 against the Texas Stars in the make-up date for the March 1 game that was suspended.
