Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Chuck Kobasew's goal at 1:22 of overtime was the difference, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins posted a 3-2 victory against the Albany Devils on Sunday afternoon at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

The victory was the sixth in the past seven games for the Penguins (36-21-3-5, 80 points), and allowed Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to pull within one point of the Binghamton Senators for the top spot in the East Division. It also allowed the Pens to reclaim sole possession of fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings, after entering the day tied with Albany (34-20-4-7, 79 points) based on points.

The Penguins entered the third period holding a 1-0 lead on Kobasew's first period power play goal. But Adam Larsson beat Jeff Deslauriers 42 seconds into the final frame, and Travis Zajac's slaphsot at 7:16 hit off the Wilkes-Barre netminder and trickled over the goal line to give the home team the 2-1 lead.

The Penguins poured on the pressure late, and it paid when Brendan Mikkelson's beat Keith Kincaid with just 64 seconds remaining in regulation to force the extra frame. Beau Bennett, playing in his second game of a conditioning stint, picked up an assist on the goal.

The goal was Mikkelson's seventh of the season, tying his single season best mark, set with the Toronto Marlies in the 2009-10 season.

Kobasew, who also assisted on Mikkelson's goal, grabbed the game-winner with a hack and whack goal just 1:22 into overtime. Scott Harrington picked up the lone helper on the tally.

Kobasew has now recorded at least one goal in each of the four games he has played with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Deslauriers made 19 saves on the afternoon to record his 20th win of the season.

The Penguins finished their three-game in three-day weekend with four of a possible six points, and are now 7-2-0-1 in their past 10 contests.

The Penguins return home on Wednesday to face the Providence Bruins at 7:05pm.
