IceCaps Keep on Trucking with 5-4 Win over Springfield

March 23, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

John Albert sniped a pair of first-period goals and Zach Redmond scored the winner with 1:19 remaining as the St. John's IceCaps held off the Springfield Falcons 5-4 Sunday afternoon at the MassMutual Center in Springfield.

Redmond and Carl Klingberg each had a goal and two assists, while JC Lipon collected three assists for the IceCaps, who have won four games in a row and 13 of their last 14.

In his first game with the club since Mar. 1 after being recalled by Winnipeg, Albert made good on an odd-man rush and buried the one-timer feed from Klingberg to give St. John's a 1-0 lead just 4:47 into the opening frame. Klingberg and Lipon set up Albert once again at 10:22 as Albert knocked the puck out of the air and deposited it past Falcons netminder Jeremy Smith. St. John's took a 3-0 lead when Redmond sprung Kyle MacKinnon on a breakaway and his shot trickled past the goal line.

Springfield finally got on the scoreboard at 3:19 of the second period as Patrick McNeill's point shot eluded St. John's netminder Jussi Olkinuora. Klingberg restored the IceCaps' three-goal lead on the powerplay at 4:29 as he was left alone in front of the net and slammed the puck into a yawning cage. Redmond and Brenden Kichton had helpers. Springfield responded at 13:39 on the powerplay as Michael Chaput's shot from the sideboards found its way through traffic. MacNeil made it a one-goal game at 5:43 of the third period as he finished off a rebound in front of the net. The Falcons squared things at four on the powerplay when captain Ryan Craig corralled a loose puck in the crease and deposited it past Olkinuora at 14:21.

Redmond sealed the win at 18:41 of the third with a blast from the point on the powerplay. Lipon and Kichton were awarded assists.
