San Antonio Rampage News Release
UTICA, NY (Oct. 24, 2014) - The San Antonio Rampage (3-2-0-0) fell to the Utica Comets (4-1-1-0) 5-2 on Friday night, marking the Rampage's second loss of the season, both of which have come at the hands of the Comets.
Logan Shaw and Steven Kampfer each tallied goals for the Rampage, and Dan Ellis finished with 14 saves on 17 shots, as two of Utica's five goals were scored on an empty net late in the third period.
San Antonio allowed a shorthanded goal for the first time since Nov. 16, 2013 when Brandon DeFazio scored on a break to give the Comets a 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game. Later in the period, Ronalds Kenins tipped in Peter Andersson's shot from the point, sending the Comets into the first intermission with a two-goal lead.
Utica took advantage of a power play opportunity late in the second period, as Nicklas Jensen deflected a Bobby Sanguinetti shot past Ellis to make it 3-0 in favor of Utica.
San Antonio would take some momentum into the second intermission, scoring a goal with 40 seconds left in the frame. Shaw tallied his first goal of the season, tipping Alex Petrovic's long-range shot over Joacim Eriksson's glove and in.
The Rampage came within one on a Steven Kampfer rocket from the point to make it 3-2 at 16:23 of the third period, but the Comets would score two empty-net goals to take a 5-2 win.
KEY STAT
The Rampage outshot the Comets 37-19, marking the largest shot differential for the Silver and Black this season. Additionally, the 19 shots against are the fewest San Antonio has allowed all season. All but three Rampage skaters recorded a shot in the loss.
SCORING NOTES
Three Rampage players recorded season firsts on Friday night. With the second assist on Shaw's second-period marker, defenseman Greg Zanon recorded his first point of the season.
Shaw's goal was his first of the year, and Kampfer's tally marked his first in a Rampage uniform.
