Springfield Falcons News Release
Springfield, Mass. - Matt Murray and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins shutout the Springfield Falcons, 5-0, tonight at the Mohegan Sun Arena.
The loss drops the Falcons to 1-3-1-0 on the season and gives the Penguins a 1-0-0-0 lead in the four-game season series. The victory moves the Penguins to 3-3-0-0.
Falcons goaltender Oscar Dansk stopped 31 of 36 shots, while Penguins goaltender Murray turned away all 21. Springfield was unable to convert on three man-advantages. The penalty kill unit allowed two goals on seven Penguins power plays.
The Penguins struck three times in the first period to put the Falcons down, 3-0. Bryan Rust opened scoring just 6:35 into the opening frame. Rust was able to beat Dansk by crossing in front of him from the left wing. Jean-Sebastien Dea and Scott Harrington picked up points for assisting on the opening goal.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton extended their lead seven minutes later. Tom Kostopoulos forced a turnover in front of the crease and chipped the puck over the stick of Brett Ponich. Nick Drazenovic was able to backhand the puck out of the air and into the back of the net.
With 2:40 remaining in the first, the Penguins picked up their third tally while the Falcons were working to kill off a double minor on Corey Cowick for high-sticking. Andrew Ebbett started the play from the right circle. He passed down to Scott Wilson at the right side of the crease. Wilson shot a feed back between his legs, where Drazenovic one-timed his second goal from the slot.
The Penguins lit the lamp twice in the third period to shutout the Falcons, 5-0. Rust scored his second of the night with a wrap around from the left side of the net at the 13:30 mark. Tom Kuhnhackl was credited with the assist.
Dea added the final mark with just under five minutes remaining. Derrick Pouliot passed across the slot from the corner to Dea in the left circle. His wrist shot beat Dansk for the Penguin's second power-play goal. Rust earned his third point for the secondary assist.
The Springfield Falcons will return to the MassMutual Center to host the Norfolk Admirals on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. and the Syracuse Crunch on Oct. 26 at 3 p.m.
