PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Norfolk Admirals and Providence Bruins had not laced up their skates since last weekend and it showed in a lethargic first period. The Admirals' first match of a three-game stretch began at a leisurely pace with neither team threatening to score early in the game.

It wasn't until Norfolk defenseman Kevin Gagne took a tripping penalty halfway through the first period that Providence was able to strike. Jordan Caron drew first blood for the Bruins on the power play. He tapped home a rebound to put Providence on the board. Admirals goalie Jason LaBarbera could not control a heavy shot from the point which trickled right to Caron standing alone by the side of the net.

The pace picked up late in the period, but there were no more markers as the first would end in the Bruins' favor, leading 1-0. Providence also held a 12-9 shot advantage on the Admirals after twenty minutes of play.

Less than six minutes into the second period, Providence's Brian Ferlin scored his first professional goal. The rookie streaked down the wing and slipped a shot past LaBarbera on the glove side. Ryan Spooner and Craig Cunningham picked up the assists on Ferlin's tally.

Matt Lindblad was quick to put Providence up by another goal as he beat LaBarbera with a shorthanded marker. John Kurtz took it upon himself to settle some of Norfolk's frustration as he dropped the gloves with the Bruins' Tommy Cross shortly after the Admirals fell behind 3-0. Through the first five games of the season, Norfolk has yet to hold a lead heading into the third period.

Norfolk picked up the intensity and put the pressure on Providence goalie Jeremy Smith early in the third period. Unfortunately it would be the Bruins who would strike quickly in the game's final frame. Caron capitalized on a pretty pass in front of the net less than five minutes into the period. His second goal of the game put Providence up 4-0.

The Admirals out-shot the Bruins 39-32, but did not outplay the opponent. Smith stood tall in net, recording the shutout. Smith's big night featured several highlight saves including a sprawling stop late in the third on Norfolk's Joseph Cramarossa. Thanks to Smith, the Bruins were able to skate away unscathed with a 4-0 victory over the Admirals. LaBarbera stopped 28 pucks.

The Admirals continue their three-game road trip tomorrow night in Springfield. Puck drops at 7:00 p.m.

Three Stars:

1) PRO Jeremy Smith (39 Saves)

2) PRO Jordan Caron (2 G)

3) PRO Brian Ferlin (1 G)
