Sacramento River Cats News Release
Salt Lake City, Utah - The Sacramento River Cats (38-49) could not hold on to an 8-1 fourth-inning lead, falling to the division-rival Salt Lake Bees (40-47) despite back-to-back home runs from right fielder Heliot Ramos and designated hitter Mike Tauchman.
Salt Lake scored a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the eighth to make it 8-5 and create a save situation for righty Gerson Bautista (1-2).
Bautista had trouble finding the strike zone in the ninth, walking four batters, including the first two he faced. First baseman Jose Rojas made Bautista pay for the free passes, winning the game with a single that barely missed being a walk-off grand slam.
The River Cats got off to a roaring start, taking a 4-0 lead before the second out of the game was recorded.
Left fielder Bryce Johnson got things going when he lined a one-out triple and scored on a wild pitch. After second baseman Jason Vosler worked a walk, Ramos and Tauchman both went yard on the first pitch of their at-bats to make it 4-0.
Ramos, MLB Pipeline's No. 60 overall prospect and the Giants' No. 3 prospect, finished the day 2-for-5 with the two-run big fly being his first at the Triple-A level.
Sacramento added another four runs in the fourth, two coming on Vosler's double, to make it 8-1, but the Bees did not quit, hitting three home runs to set up the ninth-inning rally.
Right-hander Sean Hjelle (1-0, 4.50), the Giants' No. 10 prospect on MLB Pipeline, makes his first road start for Sacramento on Sunday. He'll take on lefty Thomas Pannone (3-8, 8.39) at 12:05 p.m. (PT). Listen to Johnny Doskow call the game live on online at rivercats.com or on the MiLB First Pitch app.
Additional Notes
With two in scoring position and two outs in the fifth, righty Tyler Cyr entered and escaped the jam with a strikeout. Cyr has stranded all 12 of his inherited runners this season.
Following Cyr, right-hander Yunior Marte provided some much-needed length for the River Cats' staff, striking out two in 2.0 scoreless innings.
