Reno Aces News Release

EL PASO, Texas - The Reno Aces secured game three with an 8-3 shortened win over the El Paso Chihuahuas to remain atop the Triple-A West, West Division standings with a 51-36 record.

The game was completed early with one out in the ninth due to torrential rain and thunderstorms crossing through the areas.

Ildemaro Vargas extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run single in the sixth, registering the longest stretch by an Ace this season. The Aces' all-time hits leader finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a trio of RBIs and two runs scored.

Juniel Querecuto recorded his team-leading 14th multi-RBI contest of the year with his two-hit, three-RBI performance against El Paso. Reno's infielder also increased his base-knock stretch to five contests.

Reno jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the opening frame, capitalizing a Chihuahuas' mistake. Following a walk to Ildemaro Vargas and a single from Andrew Young, Seth Beer laced a single through the left side to bring the Aces' all-time hit leader in from second, 1-0. El Paso tried to turn a double play in the ensuing at-bat but, shortstop Pedro Florimon threw the ball away and Young came around to score, 2-0. Juniel Querecuto made the host squad pay for their mistake with a two-run shot to right-center, lifting the Aces to a four-run advantage.

After a scoreless second, the Aces added one run to their lead following back-to-back walks to Young and Beer to start the third. With runners on first and second, Querecuto delivered once again, smashing a single to left and scoring Young to give Reno a 5-0 edge.

Major League rehabber Luke Weaver hit his 60-pitch limit midway through the bottom of the third, surrendering no runs on one hit and two walks to go along with six strikeouts in 2.2 innings of action.

El Paso broke the Aces' shutout in the fourth with a sacrifice fly by Gosuke Katoh to slash the Reno lead to four, 5-1.

In the fifth frame, the Chihuahuas drove in two more runs to pull themselves to within two, 5-3.

The three unanswered runs by El Paso were quickly responded to in the top of the sixth. Following a pair of strikeouts to start the frame, Christian Lopes worked a pinch-hit walk before advancing to third on a Ben DeLuzio single to left. After the speedy DeLuzio swiped second, Vargas lined a single to right field and knocked in both runs to push the Aces' lead back to four, 7-3.

Both teams were held off the board until the Aces' Vargas smacked his third home run of the year in the ninth, taking former Reno reliever Alex Powers deep for a solo shot and giving the Aces' an 8-3 advantage.

Ryan Buchter came on in the ninth to shut the door and forced Ivan Castillo to ground out before the game was called.

The Aces will return to Southwest University Park on Sunday to take on the El Paso Chihuahuas with first pitch slated for 5:05 p.m. PT. Sunday's contest can be heard on renoaces.com or locally on KPLY 630 AM with Zack Bayrouty on the call.
