Ramon's Triple Gives Goldeyes Split of Double Dip

June 21, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release

The Winnipeg Goldeyes had one big inning and it got the home side a split in Friday night's doubleheader.

After losing the first game 3-2 to the visiting Lincoln Saltdogs, the Goldeyes bounced back with four runs in the second inning of Game 2 and let the pitchers do the rest, as Winnipeg beat Lincoln 4-3 to claim a split in the twin bill.

Amos Ramon delivered the decisive blow in Game 2. With the Goldeyes trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the second inning, Ramon came up with the bases loaded and tripled to the right-field wall. Luis Alen, Nick Liles and Mike Coles all came home to score and the Goldeyes had a 4-2 lead.

Lincoln added a run in the seventh, but that's as close they would come.

Goldeyes starter Pete Gehle, who had given up two runs in the first two innings and settled down, shut down the Saltdogs in the third, fourth and fifth and then Brendan Lafferty pitched a scoreless sixth. Closer Patrick Keating gave up a run in the seventh, but still got the save.

With the win, the Goldeyes improved to 18-16 on the season and remained a half game back of Fargo in the race for first in the American Association's North Division.

Gehle (2-1, 4.41 ERA) earned the win for Winnipeg while Keating picked up his sixth save. Matt Bywater (2-2, 3.67 ERA)) suffered the loss for Lincoln.

"The story of Game 2 was Peter Gehle and the job he did," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "He gave up a run in each of the first two innings but he settled down and got 10 straight outs and let the bullpen finish it off. You don't always know what you're going to get from these young pitchers, but Pete came into a tough situation after we lost Game 1 and did a great job for us."

Lincoln took a quick 2-0 lead in Game 2 as David Espinosa's single scored Daniel Carroll from third with the first run in the top of the first and then Mike Provencher drilled a solo homer in the second. In the top of the seventh, with two out, Carroll doubled and scored on a bloop single by Stephen Douglas off the glove of Goldeyes shortstop Nate Samson.

However, Keating got the final out and Winnipeg's four-run second inning held up.

In Game 1, Lincoln left fielder Matt Forgatch came through with a sacrifice fly, driving home pinch runner Brad Payne with the winning run in the sixth as the Saltdogs beat the Goldeyes 3-2.

Goldeyes starter Matt Rusch gave up a run in the top of the first, but Winnipeg came back with two in the bottom of the first as Mike Coles doubled in his first at bat of the season and Josh Mazzola walked. Coles went to third on a bad throw by Lincoln catcher Sean O'Connell and scored on a single by Casey Haerther. Mazzola came around to score on a single by Fehlandt Lentini and that's all the offence the Goldeyes could produce.

"Game 1 was well-pitched," said Forney. "The difference was they got a couple of hits and we didn't. We just couldn't muster any offence and we wasted a great effort by Matt (Rusch)."

Lincoln tied the game in the top of the second and then Forgatch's sac fly won it in the sixth.

Lincoln finished with three runs on seven hits while the Goldeyes had two runs on six hits. Lincoln starter Moises Melendez (2-0, 3.12 ERA) got the win, while (Rusch (4-3, 3.99) suffered the loss. R.J. Rodriguez picked up his league leading 13th save.

The two teams will go at it again on Saturday evening at 6 p.m. at Shaw Park. Tickets for all Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Ticketmaster.ca, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster outlet, including the Shaw Park box office.
