Brilliant Pitching, Early Homers Lead Wingnuts To Win

June 21, 2013 - American Association (AA)
Wichita Wingnuts News Release

SIOUX CITY, IA- The Wichita Wingnuts (23-12) shutout the Sioux City Explorers (14-20) 2-0 at Lewis and Clark Park on Friday night.

Junior Guerra tied a career-high with nine strikeouts and earned the win with seven and one-third scoreless innings. Guerra walked two and scattered five hits to improve to 4-0.

Wichita scored the only runs of the game in the top of the first. Jake Kahaulelio lined a solo home run down the left field line two batters into the contest. Later in the inning, C.J. Ziegler homered on a towering flyball that just cleared the left field fence. Ziegler narrowly missed a home run earlier in the bat on a deep flyball down the left field line that was ruled foul.

Guerra stranded a pair of runners in the bottom of the first, and picked up a key strikeout of Adrian Martinez with second and third and two outs in the bottom of the fourth.

Daniel Bennett relieved Guerra in the eighth and recorded the final two outs of the inning to keep the shutout intact.

Josh Dew worked a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth save. Dew retired Leugim Barroso on a groundball to shortstop leading off. Martinez drew a one-out walk and was pinch-run for by Anthony Kaskadden. Dew struck out Alberto Espinosa for the second out. Cole Armstrong ended the game on a pickoff throw to first immediately following the third strike on Espinosa. Ziegler applied the tag before Kaskadden could dive back safe.

It was Wichita's fourth team shutout of the season. Nieves had two hits and has hit safely in 14 consecutive games. John Rodriguez singled in the top of the eighth and stretched his hitting streak to eight games.

Late Wingnuts' bench coach Brian Rose would have turned 35 years old on Friday.
