Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

EL PASO, Texas. - The Sioux Falls Canaries had an improved offensive output on Thursday, but they could not contain the El Paso Diablos' bats in a 9-6 loss at Cohen Stadium. The Canaries lost for the seventh straight time and have gone winless thus far on their 10-game road trip through Texas.

After El Paso (8-24) grabbed an early 4-1 in the first inning, the two teams traded blows through the early frames. The Canaries (12-22) evened it at 6-6 on Stephen King's RBI single in the sixth, but El Paso regained the lead for good in the bottom half on Gabriel Suarez' run-scoring double. They added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

King had a breakout performance in his third game with the Canaries, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and a sacrifice fly.

The two teams combined for 26 hits in hitter-friendly Cohen Stadium. Jared Clark was 3-for-4 for the Canaries, but the top of the El Paso lineup was too much for Canaries pitching. The first three hitters went a combined 7-for-14 with six runs scored. Maikol Gonzalez led the attack, going 3-for-5 with two RBI.

El Paso base runners had four stolen bases. The infield turned four double plays, helping to make up for four errors.

Mitchell Clegg (1-1) suffered the loss for the Canaries, allowing seven runs on 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He did not walk anybody and struck out one.

El Paso reliever Marshall Schuler (2-0) earned the victory, and Chandler Barnard tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save of the year.

The four-game series against the El Paso Diablos continues at 8:05 p.m. CDT on Friday, June 21 in El Paso. The game will be broadcast on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 1230-AM, 98.1-FM KWSN and kwsn.com.
