August 4, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Charleston RiverDogs News Release
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Jose Ramirez penned 6.0 shutout innings, and Charleston's offense notched double-digit hits for the fourth straight game in an 8-2 win over Augusta in South Atlantic League action at Lake Olmstead Stadium Wednesday night.
With the win, the RiverDogs have seven triumphs in the last eight games in improving to 21-18, 52-56 overall, while the GreenJackets have dropped four of five, falling to 19-19, 60-48 overall.
Charleston scored in the first inning for the second game in a row, taking a 1-0 lead against Augusta's Jeremy Toole on Rob Lyerly's RBI single.
The RiverDogs did not strike again until the fifth inning, scoring four times - all with two outs - to snatch a 5-0 lead. With Emerson Landoni at first, J.R. Murphy singled, and Lyerly walked to load the bags. Luke Murton proceeded to drill a two-run double down the left-field line for a 3-0 cushion. Neil Medchill followed with a bloop two-run single on a 3-0 pitch from Toole, increasing the margin to 5-0.
Toole (4-5) worked just 4.2 innings for Augusta, surrendering five runs on six hits.
Kelvin Castro led off the sixth with an infield single, stole second base, took third on a wild pitch, and then scored on a passed ball to lengthen the Charleston advantage to 6-0.
Ramirez (6-4) gave up just five hits in the outing, with three walks and five strikeouts. The Dominican native defeated Augusta for the third time this season and has not lost a decision since June 4.
Augusta cut the score to 6-1 in the seventh on Ryan Lollis' RBI groundout.
The GreenJackets utilized a position player to pitch in the eighth inning, inserting reserve infielder Juan Martinez. Francisco Santana greeted him with a solo home run to right for his second of the year and a 7-1 lead.
Dan Cook stroked a RBI single in the bottom half for Augusta off Charleston's Ronny Marte, trimming the score to 7-2.
Lyerly led off the ninth with his 30th double of the season, and then came plateward on Kevin Mahoney's RBI single - his first SAL RBI - for an 8-2 count.
Mahoney led Charleston with three base hits, while Lyerly and Murton had two each of the RiverDogs 12 total knocks.
The final regular-season game between these two teams is set for 7:05 p.m. on Thursday, with Charleston pitching right-hander Brett Marshall (1-2, 4.50 ERA) against Augusta southpaw Wilmin Rodriguez (3-3, 3.77 ERA), who was the winning pitcher in relief in Tuesday's 15-inning contest.
