Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Charleston RiverDogs scored four times in the fifth to open a big lead in an eventual 8-2 win over the Augusta GreenJackets on Wednesday night. The red-hot RiverDogs have won seven of their last eight contests as the GreenJackets have dropped four of their last five.
The scoring started early for the RiverDogs before they broke things open in the fifth. With two hits and a walk off Jeremy Toole in the first inning, Charleston claimed an early lead on Rob Lyerly's RBI single. With two outs and a runner at first in the fifth, Toole allowed a walk and a single to load the bases for Luke Murton. The lanky Murton doubled into the left field corner on the first pitch he saw to drive home two runs and stretch Charleston's lead to three. Neil Medchill followed with a two-run single that chased Toole and gave the RiverDogs a daunting five-run advantage.
Toole (4-5) hurled 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on six hits while walking four and striking out a pair. Charleston extended the lead off reliever Kelvin Marte on a passed ball in the sixth that brought home a run.
Augusta finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh on a Ryan Lollis RBI groundout. They also got a Daniel Cook RBI single in the eighth. Infielder Juan Martinez took the mound for Augusta in the final two innings, allowing just three hits. One was a solo homer from Francisco Santana in the eighth and another was a Kevin Mahoney RBI single in the ninth.
Jose Ramirez (6-4) picked up his third win of the season against the Jackets with a solid six-inning start. He didn't allow a run and yielded just five hits and three walks while striking out five. The GreenJackets stranded 13 runners on the basepaths, a season-high for a nine-inning game.
The GreenJackets will try to earn a series split with the RiverDogs in the final matchup of the season between the two teams. Wilmin Rodriguez (3-3, 3.77) will make the spot start for Augusta against Brett Marshall (1-2, 4.50) First pitch will come at 7:05 p.m. with the pregame action beginning at 6:50 p.m. on WRDW AM 1630, www.greenjacketsbaseball.com and www.wrdwam.com .
