Leon's homer, three unearned runs send Suns past Legends, 8-5

Sandy Leon's three-run homer broke a 4-4 tie in the fourth inning, and the Hagerstown Suns went on to an 8-5 win over the Lexington Legends Tuesday night in Hagerstown.

The Suns took a 3-0 lead as the Legends committed three errors in the first inning. Consecutive singles by Rick Hague, J.P. Ramirez and Destin Hood scored one run. Left fielder Brian Kemp bobbled the hit by Hood for an error, allowing Ramirez to advance to third. After Kemp threw the ball back to the infield, shortstop Jiovanni Meyer threw to second trying to get Hood, but the ball went into right field for the second error of the inning. Ramirez scored and Hood advanced to third. Hood scored the third run after catcher Rene Garcia's pickoff throw to third base hit him in the back and bounced into left field.

The Legends came back with two runs in the top of the second. With one out, Kody Hinze hit his 15th home run of the year, a solo shot to center field. Hinze had two RBI in the game, pushing his South Atlantic League-leading total to 79. Aaron Bray doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Rene Garcia.

Lexington moved in front 4-3 with two runs in the top of the third inning. Mier and Jimmy Paredes singled with one out. Jake Goebbert doubled to right center field, scoring Mier with the tying run, but Paredes was tagged out trying to return to third after rounding the base. Hinze's single brought in Goebbert with the go-ahead run.

The Suns regained the lead for good with four runs in the bottom of the third. Ramirez and Hood singled, putting runners at first and third. When Brett Newsome's grounder got past second baseman Jimmy Paredes for the Legends' fourth error, Ramirez scored to tie the game and Hood went to third. Stephen King grounded to third baseman Jonathan Meyer, who tagged Hood out between third and home for the second out, but Leon followed with a drive over the left field wall to give the Suns a 7-4 lead. It was Leon's first homer of the season.

The Legends cut the lead to two with a run in the fifth on back-to-back doubles by Paredes and Renzo Tello, who pinch hit for Goebbert. Goebbert had pulled up with an apparent leg injury as he ran out the third-inning double, but remained in the game until Tello hit for him.

The final Hagerstown run came on J.P. Ramirez' 12th home run of the season in the bottom of the seventh. It was Ramirez' second home run in two games against Lexington.

Ben Graham (2-1), who relieved starter Graham Hicks in the fourth inning, got the win. Legends starter Luis Cruz (5-3), who gave up seven runs, three unearned, took the loss.

The series, now even at 1-1, continues with a 7:05 p.m. game Wednesday night in Hagerstown.

Attendance at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown: 763
