Hickory Crawdads News Release

HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads began a comeback attempt in the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff home run by C Zach Zaneski, but Asheville Tourists closer Sheng-An Kuo retired the next three batters to secure the 3-2 Asheville win, before 1,010 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Wednesday night. RF Jared Prince had his 21-game hitting streak end. Prince tied Bobby Spain (2008) for the second-longest hitting streak in Crawdads history.

The Tourists (52-56, 23-16) got all of their scoring done in the top of the third inning against 'Dads starter RHP Jake Brigham (2-3, 3.74 ERA). With the bases loaded and nobody out, 1B Jared Clark drove in two runs with a single to center field, plating SS Joey Wong and CF Delta Cleary, Jr. DH Nolan Arenado then brought in the third run of the frame with a run-scoring double play, allowing 2B Angelys Nina to come in from third and putting Asheville ahead, 3-0.

Brigham settled down after the third inning, allowing just those three runs (only one earned) on seven hits and three walks while fanning 10 in seven innings. The 10 strikeouts tie a single-game high for Crawdads pitchers this season, also reached by RHP Neil Ramirez on July 26 in Augusta.

Hickory (62-46, 22-16) got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning against Tourists starter RHP Nick Schnaitmann (8-8, 5.33 ERA). SS Jonathan Roof led off the inning with a walk and proceeded to steal second base and advance to third on an errant throw on the play by C Dallas Tarleton. One out later, 1B Jared Bolden drove in Roof with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, cutting the deficit to 3-1.

The Crawdads then pulled to within a run on Zaneski's leadoff homer in the bottom of the ninth, before Kuo shut the door for the 3-2 Asheville win.

Brigham took the loss for Hickory. RHP Johan Yan followed Brigham with two scoreless innings of relief. Schnaitmann picked up the win for Asheville with Kuo earning the save.
