Legends Shut out by Nationals' Mock, Three Relievers

August 4, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release

The Lexington Legends were shut out by a major league pitcher for the first three innings, but the three minor leaguers who followed were equally tough as the Hagerstown Suns blanked the Legends 2-0 Wednesday night in Hagerstown.

Washington Nationals right-hander Garrett Mock, in Hagerstown for a start as he recovers from a back injury, retired the first eight batters he faced before Brian Kemp walked with two outs in the third inning. Grant Hogue followed with a single, but Mock struck out Jiovanni Mier to end the inning.

The Suns scored both of their runs in the first inning. Rick Hague led off with a double, the only extra base hit in the game by either team. He went to third on a ground out by Adrian Sanchez. J.P. Ramirez singled to score Hague, and when the ball got by center fielder Hogue for an error, Ramirez continued to second. He went to third on an infield out, and scored when Destin Hood's grounder went off the glove of second baseman Jimmy Paredes for the Legends' second error of the inning.

Paul Applebee, who relieved Mock at the start of the fourth and allowed one hit over the next three and one-third innings, got the win to improve his record to 3-4. Lexington starter Zach Grimmett (4-2), who allowed one earned run through the first six innings, took the loss.

The Suns have taken two of the first three in the series, which concludes with a 7:05 p.m. game Thursday night.

Attendance at Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown: 642
