Intimidators Win Three Straight, 4-2

August 4, 2010 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release

The Kannapolis Intimidators shot out to a 3-0 lead and held on to win their third straight game 4-2 behind another strong pitching performance from starter Andre Rienzo against the Greensboro Grasshoppers. The Intimidators are looking for their first sweep of the season in the final game of the series on Thursday.

After a tremendous month of July where Rienzo (4-4) went 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA, he began the month of August almost as strong. Rienzo allowed only a two-run home run in the fourth inning to Chad Cregar in his 6.2 innings with six strikeouts and no walks. Rienzo has 24 strikeouts in his last four games with one walk. He left the game with a small cut on his finger but should be alright.

In the first inning the Intimidators (18-21) shot out to a 1-0 lead as Daniel Wagner walked to lead off the game, stole second, moved to third on a fielders choice and scored on a single by Kyle Colligan off Matt Montgomery. Montgomery (9-9) was going for his league-leading tenth win of the season.

Up 1-0 in the third, with no one on and two down, Tyler Saladino hit his third double of the series and Colligan walked in front of Ian Gac who hit the base of the wall in left, scoring both Saladino and Colligan to give the Intimidators a 3-0 lead. They scored an unearned run in the fourth on a single from Wagner and that was it for the scoring in the ballgame. Montgomery went five innings, and the leagues 8th best in ERA allowed three runs and walked four, three of which scored in the loss for the Grasshoppers (20-19)(.

After Rienzo exited in the seventh, on came Ryan Kussmual who allowed a single and put runners on second and third in a 4-2 game but then struck out a batter to retire the side. Kussmual then worked to the next six batters in order, recording two more strikeouts in his first save of the season.

The win was the first for the team that scored the games first run in the last seven games for the Intimidators and it was their third win in a row after losing three straight. The Intimidators have won 11-of-16 and look for their first series sweep on Thursday behind starting pitcher Ryan Buch. He will be opposed by lefty Edgar Olmos for the 7:05 pm start at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.
