Tacoma Rainiers News Release
TACOMA, Wash. - A strong offensive performance and a lockdown bullpen effort pushed the Tacoma Rainiers (36-34) to a 12-3 rout of the Iowa Cubs (25-42) on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium.
The Rainiers offense erupted on Father's Day, scoring in six-of-eight innings for a total of 12 runs, their most since dropping a dozen runs on Sacramento on April 22 in a 12-5 victory.
Center fielder Andrew Aplin (1x4, R, HR, 3 RBI), first baseman Daniel Vogelbach (1x5, 2 RBI), and second baseman Zach Vincej (2x3, 2 R, 2B, 2 RBI) combined to drive in seven runs. Left fielder John Andreoli reached base three times on a 1-for-3, two-walk performance that included a triple, and right fielder Kirk Nieuwenhuis drew a trio of walks.
Rainiers starting pitcher Bryan Evans, making his season debut after opening the year in the Mexican League, allowed three runs on three hits over 3.2 innings of work. He walked three, struck out three, and surrendered a pair of home runs.
Tacoma's bullpen worked 5.1 spectacular innings, combining to hold the Cubs scoreless on just three hits while striking out five. Tucker Healy (1.1 IP), Lindsey Caughel (2.0 IP), Darin Gillies (1.0 IP), and Matt Tenuta (1.0 IP) all contributed to the effort. Caughel (2-2) earned his second win of the season.
Tacoma left-hander Ross Detwiler (0-1, 7.45) takes on Iowa southpaw Kyle Ryan (0-1, 3.38) as the series continues on Monday night at 6:05 p.m. PT.
