Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers failed to hold on to an early lead and fell to the Oklahoma City RedHawks 3-1 in front of 2,938 fans at RedHawks Field on Wednesday.
Tacoma took a 1-0 lead in the first that lasted until the RedHawks scored three runs in the fifth inning en route to winning the second game of the four-game series between the two teams.
A pair of errors committed by the Rainiers led to the first two runs for the RedHawks. A fielding error by first baseman Matt Tuiasosopo allowed Tommy Manzella to score and a throwing error by starting pitcher Chaz Roe was enough to plate outfielder J.B. Shuck. OKC outfielder Jason Michaels drove in the final run of the game with two outs in the inning after scoring Jose Vallejo on a line drive single.
The Rainiers lone run of the game was driven in on a sacrifice fly hit by outfielder Mike Carp that scored outfielder Franklin Gutierrez from third base. Carp went hitless against the RedHawks on Wednesday night to end his hit streak at 13 games, the longest strung together by any Rainier this season.
The outfielder Gutierrez ended the night going 2-for-4 in the sixth game of his Major League Baseball rehab assignment with Tacoma. Josh Bard and Johan Limonta turned in the Rainiers other two multi-hit outings after each recorded a pair of hits with one double.
Former Rainier and current RedHawks starting pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith (1-2) picked up the win after holding Tacoma to one run on six hits over six innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. Fernando Rodriguez earned his first save, tossing a scoreless inning with two strikeouts in the ninth.
Tacoma starter Chaz Roe (0-4) was dealt the loss after surrendering three runs, one earned, with one walk and three strikeouts over 5.2 innings.
The Rainiers (12-22) return to action at 5:05 p.m. on Thursday to play the third game of their four-game set with Oklahoma City. Left-hander Fabio Castro (1-2, 5.65) is slated to start for the Rainiers in the contest against RedHawks left-hander Douglas Arguello (2-2, 3.05). The game can be heard live on South Sound Sports 850-AM and streamed online at www.tacomarainiers.com.
