Iowa Cubs News Release

Colorado Springs, CO - The Colorado Springs Sky Sox (14-19) scored six runs with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning on their way to a 13-6 win over the Iowa Cubs (14-18) at Security Service Field tonight. The Cubs have lost three in a row for the second time this season and drop to a new season-low four games under .500.

The Cubs took an early 2-0 lead on RBI singles by Bobby Scales and Jonathan Mota in the top of the second inning, but the Sox tied the game on a two-run triple by Des Moines native Matt Macri in the bottom of the frame. The Cubs took the lead back at 3-2 on a sacrifice fly by Marquez Smith in the top of the third inning before the Sox changed the game.

Veteran Doug Davis was making his Iowa debut on the mound tonight and was at 50 pitches through three innings. After a pair of strikeouts to start the fourth, Davis was pulled after 59 total pitches. Thomas Diamond took over and gave up a double to Macri, walked Matt Pagnozzi, and gave up a base hit to Sox' starting pitcher Greg Reynolds that brought in Macri to tie the game at three. After a walk to Eric Young, Jr. loaded the bases, Diamond got Willy Tavares to hit a ground ball to shortstop that looked like it would get him out of the inning. Mota fielded the ball cleanly and flipped to Scales at second in time for the force out, but Scales dropped the ball for an error. Pagnozzi scored the go-ahead run and the inning continued. Diamond then hit Chris Nelson with a pitch to force in another run before Josh Fields drove a 3-2 pitch to the gap in right-center field to clear the bases and cap the rally. Five of the six runs were unearned, but the Sox led 8-3.

The Cubs pulled back to within three at 8-5 on a two-run homer by Bryan LaHair in the fifth inning, but the Sox added three runs with another two-out rally in the sixth inning to pull ahead 11-5. Eliezer Alfonzo singled with the bases loaded to drive in two and Brad Emaus added an RBI single of his own.

The Cubs got their final run on a second LaHair homer in the eighth. Tonight was his second straight multi-homer game and his third of the season. He also hit two against New Orleans at Principal Park on Sunday, but wasn't in the lineup on Monday for the Cubs. He leads the team with eight home runs.

The Sox added their final two runs off Jeff Stevens in the eighth. Fields hit an opposite field home run for his fifth long ball of the year. Pagnozzi drove in the last run with a two-out single.

Diamond (0-3) was charged with nine runs (four earned) on seven hits in 2.1 innings and suffered the loss. Reynolds (3-0) allowed five runs on 10 hits over six innings to get the win.

The Cubs and Sky Sox continue this series tomorrow at 12:05 Central time. RH Jay Jackson (1-1, 5.31) is scheduled to pitch for the Cubs against LH Josh Muecke (1-3, 5.59) for the Sox. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 11:45 a.m.
