Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers doubled their way to a 5-1 win over Reno at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night.
Designated hitter Jack Hannahan started the Rainiers extra-base party with a double to center that drove in outfielder Michael Saunders for Tacoma's first run of the evening. One batter later, first baseman Mike Carp notched a double of his own to score Hannahan and give the Rainiers a 2-0 lead.
After watching the Aces cut the lead to one run in the top of the next inning following a sacrifice fly from Reno's Mark Hallberg, the Rainiers answered back with three more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Outfielder Ryan Langerhans' double drove in one, while Matt Mangini's single to center two batters later drove in two more Tacoma runs.
Reno tried to start a rally with a run in the top of the eighth after Yunesky Sanchez scored off Halberg's sacrifice fly, but failed to mount enough offense to erase their three-run deficit.
As a team, the Rainiers finished the night tying a season high with five doubles and combined to collect 10 hits in the outing, with three walks and four strikeouts.
Starter Luke French earned the win for Tacoma, his third of the season, after limiting the Aces to just one run despite giving up 10 hits with five walks and a pair of strikeouts.
The loss went to Reno starter Bryan Augenstein after the right-hander allowed all five Rainiers runs to score on nine hits in a six-inning effort, with two walks and two strikeouts.
Levale Speigner picked up his second save of the season after a hitless and scoreless performance through the final 1.2 innings of action from the mound.
The Rainiers return to the field at Cheney Stadium tomorrow in their series finale with the Aces beginning at 1:30 p.m. Headed to the mound for Tacoma will be right-hander Steven Shell against Reno right-hander Billy Buckner.
