Two-out hits, four-run innings sting Beavers in doubleheader

May 1, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL) - Portland Beavers News Release

SALT LAKE CITY - Cory Aldridge hit a pinch-hit, grand slam in a 6-2 win and Freddy Sandoval hit a go-ahead two-run double in a 6-3 victory in the nightcap as the Salt Lake Bees swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Portland Beavers at Spring Mobile Ballpark Saturday night.

With one on and two out in the sixth inning of game one, Portland reliever Greg Burke (1-1) issued a pair of walks to load the bases for Aldridge, who slugged his fifth home run of the season onto the right-center field berm.

Kevin Frandsen, who joined the Bees (10-11) on Thursday, had three hits in the doubleheader while Mark Trumbo also had three knocks. Sandoval had two hits, two RBIs and scored twice on the evening.

For the Beavers (10-12), Anthony Contreras went 2-for-2 with an RBI in the first game while Mike Baxter belted his first home run and Luis Durango had three hits and his league-leading 11th stolen base in the second game. Eric Munson also connected on his second homer of the season in game two.

Bees game one starter Sean O'Sullivan (2-2) pitched a seven-inning complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out five.

The Bees struck first in game one with two runs in the second, as Gary Patchett lined an RBI single to right-center and Sandoval scored on a forceout.

Kazmar doubled and scored on a groundout in the third and Contreras knocked in Dusty Ryan in the fourth as Portland leveled the game at two.

The Bees would rally against Burke with their four-run sixth to capture the lead for good.

The Beavers' game one starter Cesar Ramos went five innings and gave up two runs on six hits but did not factor in the decision.

In game two, Portland started the scoring in the second on Munson's home run and added one in the third on a run-scoring groundout by Chris Denorfia.

Salt Lake went from two runs down to two runs up with four runs off reliever Luis Perdomo (1-2) in the fourth. With one out, Michael Ryan tripled home Frandsen and scored on an RBI single by Trumbo. After a throwing error by the first baseman Munson extended the inning, Sandoval hit his two-out, line-drive double to left to plate the two go-ahead runs.

Baxter crushed his first home run of the season in the fifth but the Bees responded with two insurance runs in the bottom half of the inning. Nate Sutton got things started with a leadoff double. After a Bourjos single, Frandsen hit his RBI single and Bourjos scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan.

Portland threatened in the seventh as Durango and Kazmar led off with singles. But Rafael Rodriguez induced a double play by Baxter and a groundout by Craig Cooper to lock up his fifth save.

Bobby Cassevah (1-1) earned his first win of the season with 1 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Fernando Rodriguez, who gave up two runs in 2 1/3 frames.

Game two Portland starter Radhames Liz pitched just two innings but retired all six batters he faced with two strikeouts.

The Beavers and Bees wrap up the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. (Pacific).
